RE: Does Banks System Help a Workhorse?

Some people like to throw $$ away. When I had our 2001 Adventurer I left the engine asa it was. The $$ spent would not make that much if any improvement. While I'm NOT a fan of the banks system (my reasons have been posted long ago) I do believe in a well tuned exhaust system including the "X-PIPE" Now as I have stated a well tuned exhaust will scavenge MORE SPENT fuel out of the cylinder allowing the fresh mixture to produce more power.....Thats why the work horse changed the exhaust manifolds to a slightly better design... Those stories about the fuel milage being the same is pure B.S. since more power is obtained with the same amount of throttle will allow anyone to back off of the throttle and maintain the speeds they drive. Before and after test indicate anywhere from 1-2 inches more of vacuum (Indexed gauge) while climbing the hills out of the Coachella valley (Palm Springs), A cold air package is another good thing to add on since cooler air (dense) entering your intake will give anyone a better boost for a low price...... RE: p-30 exhaust

I need to replace the exhaust on my 87 Allegro with a p-30 chassis 137 inch wheel base. I need to replace from the mufflers back. oe replacement is way to much for me right now. I am wondering if anybody has used after market mufflers and tail pipes. where did ya get them and approx. cost. Thanks in advance Wils Most good muffler shops will store "Take offs" that are close to new condition....Just check around in your area..Also pipe is cheap. Jim

RE: New to me 1987 Coachmen Classic 360

Sometimes a red hot exhaust can be because one cylinder isn't firing and dumping fuel into the eshaust system. you might check by unplugging each spark plug one at a time and see if it changes the way it runs. If it doesn't, that cylinder may not be firing. The engine was running smoothly but I'll check for that, thanks. I have found the red hot exhaust will do that if you have a cat converter, didn't know it would happen without one. Nope.....Two reasons for red hot manifolds ONLY......Late timing #1 and lean mixture #2 and I have never seen a RIG running lean unless there is a massive vacuum leak.... Jim

RE: Generator Air vs. Dash Air

I think the figure of 1 gallon per hour to run the generator at full load is too high. Try checking the numbers at 1/2 gallon per hour which should be closer to actual usage. Chief, My Onan 6500 running with both airs on consumes 1 GPH (measured) and with the PD9245 cranking also..... Jim

RE: Generator fuel line

i was going to drop my fuel tank this year and change out the hard to get to fuel lines but ended up bolting it back in place and never changed them, the way mine is put in place required more floor jacks and extra help then i had to work with.they wedged it between the frame rails pretty good and vent hose out the side and thru the frame rail made it impossible for me to do alone, Thats why I spent the money for the 17 X 28 flat hyd lift (500 pds) which is now priced around $100.00, It has many uses around the shop also like rolling batteries & compressors........... Indeed it is a "cool tool" as long as you can get the RV far e'nuf in the air to drop & roll your tank out..... Jim

RE: 1984 Pace Arrow Engine Issue

That would be correct EASY, 2 months ago a call from a person in Arizona complained about excessive fuel consumption and lack of power. While waiting for a person to push the gas peddle so he could check the timing he happened to mess with the rotor......The rotor move up/down 1/4 inch...!!! The shims on the distributer gear have/had worn out and created that excessive gap, The correct movement/gap is .021 thou NOT .250 and what was happening while the RPMs increased the gear would crawl up on the cam drive gear limiting the advance..... New distributer ordered from summit and center & weights transfered and now everything is running very well....End of problems... Jim

RE: 1984 Pace Arrow Engine Issue

so 4mpg is standard? i thought 8mpg was to be expected.. Nope....4 MPG is a waste.....Mine hands out 9.25 with a Saturn in tow total weight is 17,500 pounds.. Jim

RE: 1984 Pace Arrow Engine Issue

He is telling you what he did to recurve his distributor. It should be done on a machine, not really a DIY project unless you put in the parts and hope what you are shooting for is what you get. I can guaranty with the suggested center & weights (375 & 41) your distributer will crank out 22º plus advance.....Now the springs used is another thing and they will control how fast or slow that point is reached. I've never seen an older HEI crank out 16º or more and between the stock setting (Idle 4º) and that sick 16º mechanical it's no wonder they run hot with NO power..... Mine sets at 10º with 22º mechanical with a 10º vacumm advance for the grand total of 42º @3000 RPM lite footing it down the slab, The stock vacuum cans hand out a 25º advance (generally) and digging into a steep hill with less than 5 inches of vacuum they are out of the picture period..... One can modify the vac can by making a stop plate that will only allow the movement of 110 thou which is about 10º... Jim

RE: 1984 Pace Arrow Engine Issue

ok sounds like a plan to drain the AF and flush the system. on a semi related note, this trip we got 4 miles per gallon. could the engine running hot cause this or how can i ncrease that miles per gallon? I was hoping for at least 8!!! LOL!!! My 83 (454) started out at 4.5 MPG with NO power.....A quick ignition check indicated 4º at idle and 20º at 3200 RPM....That stinks. Bump up your idle to at least 8º and find some ignition centers with a 375 stamped on it and some 41 weights and that will produce 22º mechanical so the total combo will produce 30º up & down the hills. Also installed a 10º vacuum can since mine is set at 10º base and 22-23º mechanical, That mod alone will remove the heat problem... Jim

RE: Updated Request for Tach Install Help!!!

Doug, I have NO idea which HEI you have BUT the ones I deal with (older)have a fat red wire (12 GA)plugged into the cap (left side)......Just pop the cap and tilt it to the right and you will see another empty connector looking back at you......Thats the tach lead...... Please remember the tach power & lead in are right next to each other...... The 12 volt connection hasta be a seperate power lead coming from a fused position and operating with the ignition key "ON/OFF" and there are a few but hard to find of those critters..... May I suggest the radio power BUT with that and the key in the ACC. position the tach will be hot..... Jim

RE: Updated Request for Tach Install Help!!!

All of the tach's I install have 4 wires......Red +12V...Black ground white is hooked up to the dash lite fuse and the green connects into the "Tach" on the distributer CAP next to the 12 Volt HEI connection......... Do not connect the RED wire on the tach to the distributer (Causes problems) but find a wire in the fuse panel that switches on/off when operating the ignition key..... Jim

RE: 1982 PACE ARROW FUEL TANK CAPICITIES

I'M GETTING A 1982 PACE ARROW CAN ANYONE TELL ME THE FUEL TANK CAPACITIES, IT HAS TWO TANKS JOHN John, IF your tanks are "say" rectangler or square just multiply the length X width X highth devided by .231 My tank (new) measures 50" long by 27" wide and 14" tall so that works out to be 81.818 Gallons......
